Central Midfielder
Richard Smallwood is a seasoned English midfielder known for his leadership, defensive solidity, and tactical discipline. Born in Redcar in 1990, he came through Middlesbrough’s academy and went on to make over 400 appearances across the EFL. His career highlights include pivotal roles in promotions with Rotherham United, Blackburn Rovers, Hull City, and most recently Bradford City, where he was club captain and named Player of the Season in 2024–25. In July 2025, he signed for Tranmere Rovers, continuing his career in League Two.
Primarily a defensive midfielder, Smallwood excels in ball recovery, positioning, and distribution. He’s known for his high work rate, strong tackling, and calmness under pressure—often dictating tempo from deep. While not flashy, his reliability and leadership have made him a trusted figure at every club he’s served, frequently wearing the armband. His influence extends off the pitch too, mentoring younger players and embodying the professionalism essential for long-term success in the Football League.
